Our Review of the JANÉ Indy Plus booster seat

JANÉ Indy Plus Booster carseat is a one of a kind booster seat that combines a belt positioning system with a unique reclining base that secures to your vehicle's lower LATCH anchor points. In addition to this distinctive safety feature, the JANÉ (pronounced "Ha-ney") Indy Plus provides a full range of customizable comfort adjustments, from a reclining seat and backrest to adjustable side and head wings.

The JANÉ Indy Plus booster car seat is truly extraordinary. Lined with impact absorbing EPS foam and built on a reinforced aluminum chassis, the Indy Plus safely and comfortably secures a child from 30 to 80 lbs. Thanks to its unmatched adjustment settings, the Indy Plus works with kids of any shape and size, adapting easily to their body type and preferences.

The closest comparison to the JANÉ Indy Plus would be the Recaro Start. The Start is a first-class, plush booster seat that is built on a great frame, and adjusts to maximize your child's comfort. However, the Recaro Start does not recline like the Indy Plus.

Q: What makes the JANÉ Indy Plus Booster so unique?

The base of the JANÉ Indy Plus Booster has a very novel safety feature: a retractable, rigid LATCH attachment system in that allows you to lock the base into place without having to wedge your hands into the seat crack abyss to find your anchor points. Once secured, you can move the base of the Indy forward or back, and recline the seat as your child likes it.

See page 10 of the JANÉ Indy Plus manual for more information on this unique LATCH attachment system.

The seat of the Indy Plus Booster has a fast and easy to use recline adjustment as well. You simply pull forward on the handle at the front of the thickly padded seat and you can adjust the angle to one of three different positions. The custom comfort possibilities do not end there, however.

A: Copious Creature Comforts

The JANÉ Indy Plus Booster provides boys and girls of all shapes and sizes with custom comfort, thanks to exclusive adjustment settings for the arm rests, headrest, and side wings. Not only is the height of the headrest easily adjusted, but two knobs on the side of the backrest allow you to expand or draw-in the wings of the head and backrest . . . providing a perfect fit, quickly and easily. The net effect of this total-body adjustment system is added side-impact protection without making your son or daughter claustrophobic.

You will be amazed by the quality of the plastic and fabric components of the Indy Plus Booster. The ventilated, stain-resistant fabrics and thick padding are top notch – and it's very easy to remove and toss them in the wash when you need to.

Bottom Line: We must admit, we?re extremely impressed with the JANÉ Indy Plus Booster. It is pricier than many booster seats, and relatively heavy, but the LATCH attachment system for the base, aluminum chassis, and abundant adjustment options make this an all-around-outstanding booster seat.

As a belt-positioning booster, the Indy Plus isn't as easy to install as most others – which require simply threading the seatbelt and buckling. There is a a learning curve to properly installing and using all the features of this seat, but with a little practice you'll have it down in no time . . . and your kid will thank you.

We wanted to love it but...

Reviewer: Tracy , Evanston, IL Date: August 16, 2008
I know some may read this review and not like what they read. However, I must first say that I really really wanted to love this booster seat. GOOD: It has LATCH, side impact protection, adjusts many ways with a simple turn of the knob or pull up for height adjustment. It reclines (sort of). It looks really sharp and cool. BAD: Well, it kinda reclines. Position #1 is useless because to get a tight LATCH install, the base is so close to the backrest that Position #2 is the default. That means Position #3 barely reclines it at all. You'd almost do better with a rolled up towel which is also cheaper. When you switch recline positions, the seat flops around and feels very flimsy. My son laughs because every time he sits in it, the base wheezes out air because it's cheap hollow plastic. I almost put a knee on it to get a tight install and stopped myself for fear of shattering it. The armrests are quite flimsy. When my son gets in and out, he has the habit of pushing his weight on them to move around. They bend and I cringe knowing one of these days they're just gonna pop out. UGLY: The entire seat is attached to the LATCHED base toward the rear of the seat. It moves sideways and up with little effort. In a severe impact what's the use if the whole seat jostles all over? The LATCH seems to only serve the purpose of keeping the seat tight for non-use so it doesn't become a projectile. The alloy frame is not impressive and there's not much of it. It had scratches from the comical shipping box with no bubble wrap or peanuts. The WORST thing about the seat is that the torso bolsters move and flap around with hardly any effort. They're held on by the thinnest plastic, and have a nice chunk of styrofoam in them. I can move them with one finger and my son moves them constantly when he dances around. I had to yell at his brother because he was about to lean on the side bolster and I was terrified that it was just going to crack right off. That inspired me to pull the cover off, and guess what? There is a huge gouge in the styrofoam that had a striking resemblance to a gouge in the shipping box. So with the whole family watching I made a soft fist, pushed outward on the side bolster to simulate a moderate impact. The bolster pushed out and the damn orange knob popped off revealing the sharp mechanism. My oldest son said it best when his opened wide and he scoffed, speechless. Will there be a soft recall for this issue? I know there should be some give but Elite should do a 360 diagram so everyone can see how thin the plastic is. Three boys in the same back seat, will this thing last long enough for me to return it?! The base also has nominal anti-submarining properties. Well, I feel all dirty now, like I tattled on a good friend. Jane, we wanted to love you. How about a GEN 2 INDY that's not quite so flimsy? We'd come back for that. Looks like it's a Recaro Start for us. :0(

Comments from The Staff:

Our apologies; it sounds like the seat was damaged during shipping. Please feel free to contact Customer Service at 1-800-891-3857 for immediate assistance. We allow you 30-days to return any product purchased from us, and we know people change their minds because an online picture of a product just isn?t the same as having it in your hands to examine.

Thank you very much for your no holds barred review of the JANE Indy Booster. We appreciate your opinion and regret your disappointment in the seat. However, we want to clarify some of the issues you brought up for our other readers.

The Recline: While the recline feature is somewhat limited on this seat (it?s not going to allow for 45 degree recline or anything) how much benefit it serves really has more to do with the vehicle seats than anything. Some vehicle seats have angled seats which may allow for more recline than others with this booster. Regardless ? that?s more than a lot of other boosters offer. Most boosters we carry don?t recline at all which is mainly due to the best practice in safety that all children in the forward-facing position should be in the most upright position possible. Some car seat manufacturers do realize however the convenience and comfort that a reclining seat back offers a child and have therefore provided this feature.

LATCH: LATCH is not required to be incorporated on booster seats. Boosters that do have LATCH provide a stable installation and prevent the booster seat from becoming a projectile when not in use in the event of a collision. There is no proven safety benefit to the child sitting in a booster installed using LATCH because the safety feature protecting the child is the vehicle?s lap and shoulder belt which is meant to retain both child and booster seat in the event of a collision. It?s a nice feature to have for sure but will not benefit your child from a safety perspective and should not be expected to do so.

Styrofoam Lining: The Styrofoam you are referring to is actually there to serve a purpose. It?s actually called EPS (Expanded PolyStyrene) Energy Absorbing Foam. It?s similar to what is used in bicycle helmets to protect the head and in car seats it helps absorb crash forces therefore providing extra protection.

Thank you,

Kelly

Nearly Perfect!

Reviewer: Nolan , Milwaukee, WI Date: August 02, 2008
Before I actually review the Indy, I'll tell you about our previous booster experiences.
Britax Parkway: We owned a pair of these for our 4/5 year old. They were okay, but no latch and too constricting as they had no adjustment features aside for height. They flopped all over the place also.
Britax Monterey: Bought one just before this and returned it. It has latch but the side wings, like the Parkway are so constricting and offer limited sightlines and airflow. It also fit a little strange in the Camry.
Recaro Start: This is far and away the BEST booster out there, provided a few things. If it's more or less not going to move, if the child will likely use it for several years (say 4 to 9), and if cost is no object, then get the Recaro Start. The Start adjusts so many ways, and has an aluminum C-channel frame that could double as a guard rail!
FINALLY for the Jane Indy! WOW! What a difference over all the above. Far better than the Britax's in every way, and much MUCH easier to adjust than the Start. Just twist a couple knobs, bingo bongo, you're all set! The LATCH is a bit difficult to get, but once you've done it a couple times, it really is the best design I've seen. It seems a little better than tether straps, however, tethers are nice because they allow a little bit of give to contour to the seat. The only negatives I can find: Rigid LATCH system is a little cumbersome, and the aluminum frame is made of a much lower gauge that the Recaro Start. Sorta like a stroller's frame, questionable advantage over modern plastics. All and all, a terrific seat that will likely enjoy a solid following and resale experience.

Fantastic carseat

Reviewer: Anonymous , the Netherlands Date: June 06, 2008
I Love this carseat. we live in the netherlands and unfortunatly there is no such thing a 'High weight limit harnessed seat' So my 4 year old (5 in 2 months) has to use a boosterseat. She is secure and safe in this seat, just like her 7 year old sister, the seat adjust so very great to fit the children, the side wings are adjustable, tight for my youngest daugher, and my oldest daughter has room to grow. The fabric is great, easy to clean, and very comfortable for my girls. This seat replaced my Maxi Cosi Rodi SPS & Maxi Cosi Rodi XR, that I didn't like.

Jane Indy Plus

The seat is solid and installs very easily. The manufacturer should figure out how to secure the headrest so that it doesn't pop out when lifted by it. It's very hard to get it back in.

Very Nice

Reviewer: Kaci , Idaho Date: March 20, 2008
I appreciate the peace of mind I have with my son riding in this booster. My son is happy with it as well; he finds it comfortable and thinks it looks cool. I had no trouble connecting the LATCH in my 2007 Toyota Corolla. The seat fits well. My one complaint is that my son finds it difficult to tighten the seat belt after buckling himself in. Not impossible, just not easy. I have never used another booster seat, and thus can offer no comparison. Overall I am very pleased.

Best booster seat I've tried but...

Reviewer: Anonymous , Shaker Heights, OH Date: March 01, 2008
...I could not get the LATCH to engage in my Ford Escape. I'm not sure if the booster was defective, because my anchors are easily accessible. The total adjustability of this seat makes it the best I've tried (among Britax, Compass, Graco). This is a European seat maker (made in China, though) and it appears they've got a newer model out in the European market. But I was thrilled with this one's features and was very disappointed to return it!

Great Product!

Reviewer: Anonymous , Chicago, IL Date: February 24, 2008
I am very satisfied with this product. We got a new car and I wanted a car seat that didn't slide around all over the place every time I took a turn. I feel like my four year old is more secure. The only thing that I have found to be an issue is that my very opinionated child is irritated that the arm rests are not usable, burried under the wings and too short or far back into the seat. Otherwise we are all very happy with this product. Our new car is the Volvo XC90 and it is a little difficult to get the seat in and out because of the way the latch system works but since we have a very portable Compass B510 in my husband's car (a year old and but filthy.....washing it doesn't help, fabric is not forgiving, scotch guard if you buy it) so I am OK with it. The Jane is not so large that I have had to give up the third seat in the middle row, which surprised and thrilled me. If you are familiar with this car it has a built in booster that I use to transport my little one's friends and its use has not been compromised. I like the wings, their placement and depth, sleeping in this seat is easy and a huge plus for us. I did a ton of research and took my child all over town to try different seats and this one seemed to be the only one that met all of our requirements. My daughter is no waif so the size and comfort were critical, she is 50lbs and 43 inches tall. It is my hope that this is our final car seat purchase for this child....we shall see!

Booster with Latch!

5
Reviewer: Anonymous , Kent, WA Date: January 24, 2008
Our Tall, skinny 4 year old daughter, had outgrown the Britax marathon. We didn't want to move her into a booster, but didn't have a choice. For travel we chose the Compass 510 for the compactness, light, and ease of shipping. While in Hawaii with the Compass, our daugther announced that she hated it. She could not get comfortable to sleep. When she did fall asleep, someone had to hold her head. I found the Jane Indy Plus Booster used the latch system just like the Britax Marathon did. It is heavier than most boosters. The aluminum frame would not be good for travel and checking purposes. The booster is very padded and comfortable. The booster is adjustable in the torso length, so it will grow with her. The wings for the head are fully adjustable, she can sleep! Yeah. This booster is the only one available to recline. The seat has 3 settings. The wings for the torso sides are adjustable, perfect for the tall skinny child. The booster was a little hard to install. It took 2 adults to get the latch system to secure on each side. Once you see the green indicator, the booster is installed. The recline feature is a little tricky. Once you find the recline seating for the booster, leave it. I would say that it is not easy to adjust on a daily basis. My daughter is not able to buckle her self. It does take an adult to secure her for every car ride. We like this, we know she is in. The booster does not move around when the car goes around a turn. The latch system is very tight and secure. We find this booster to be a great replacement to the Britax Marathon. I would have preferred to keep her in a 5 point system longer, but she is too tall. The booster is a little expensive, but worth the safety features.

Reviewers need to rethink their thoughts

5
Reviewer: Cherie , Edgewood, MD Date: December 03, 2007
It's so unnerving to have someone unqualified make ASSUMPTIONS about a car seat/booster that are untrue. Another reviewer wrote about a weight maximum in effect with this booster seat allowing it only to be tethered until the child reached 48 lbs. This is NOT the case at all and I'm upset that no one caught this before it posted. The LATCH system in cars is designed to be used until a child reaches 48 lbs. The reviewer was correct in this, but forgot to take into account that this factors in the weight of a car seat in the equation, most weighing less than 20 lbs. (if you're still with me, that's a combined weight of about 68 lbs on the latch connectors) This booster seat weighs in at 17 lbs. The weight of your child rests COMPLETELY on your vehicle's seat belt, NOT the Latch connectors. It wouldn't matter if you put a 100 lb child in this seat, you would still be correct in installing it with LATCH since the only weight on the LATCH connectors is that of the seat itself (17 lbs). Jane made a magnificent advancement to the marketing of booster seats and it's rough to see their name tainted by someone who doesn't know what they are talking about! For those interested in keeping their child in a 5pt harness as long as possible, consider the Britax Traveller or Regent, or for those with less space, the Sunshine Kids Radian 80 are all equipped to maintain 5pt harness until at least 80 lbs.
